South Punjab 2021-22

Cotton IPM

The Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC), Pakistan, under the Chair of  Syed Fakhar Imam, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, on 1st September 2021, expected 8.46 million bales (@170KG) during the current crop season, all over the country. Punjab is expected to produce 8.5% more cotton from 17% less sown. (Complete Story)

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Mr. Syed Fakhar Imam, chaired a meeting to appreciate the positive trend in cotton production in Islamabad on 20th September 2021.

“While comparing the production data of cotton till 15th September with the last year, over 2.69 million bales against 1.04 million bales have been transferred to the grinning factories despite having the lowest area of cultivation in the last 20 years for cotton, at about 1.87 million hectares.” He said that it is 159% increase in cotton arrival from the last year. Given the current trends of cotton arrival, it seems the total production of cotton will exceed the previous estimate of 8.46 million bales. Minister said that the need of the hour is to ensure vigilant crop management to maintain the positive yield trend."

This year, the Agriculture Department South Punjab has launched Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for cotton crop (South Punjab has cultivated 96% of cotton of Punjab). A scientifically developed and skillfully implemented IPM is giving results.

IPM Model

The Department has setup 125 IPM demo plots throughout South Punjab to implement IPM techniques. The nearby farmers were invited to show case the results. The surveys are going on and we shall share impact assessment soon.

Meanwhile, The Express Tribune has reported demand of farmers from Sindh for the IPM. It is a reasonable demand.
