"Cotton IPM Model 2021" Delivered 115% ROI to the Farmers in
South Punjab, Pakistan

For centuries, the cotton crop has provided clothes, edible oil, animal feed, and fuel to our ancestors in the valleys of Sindh, Nile, Aztec and Mexico. Even in modern times, cotton and its related industries are the economic backbones of some countries, including Pakistan. Pakistan is the fifth largest producer of the cotton crop and the third-biggest consumer. Cotton is a valuable contributor to the national Gross Domestic Product and employs millions of people.

However, cotton had faced an unprecedented decline since 2014-15 when Pakistan got around more than 10.48 million bales (@170KG), with 25.29 maunds/acre (37 kg = one maund as a raw cotton measuring unit in past years)". South Punjab grows 96% of the cotton in Punjab, which bears 70% of the country's cotton production.

Keeping in view the circumstances, Agriculture Department South Punjab (ADSP) prepared an "Integrated Pest Management" (IPM) model to reduce input costs, increase per acre productivity and improve return on investment (ROI) for the cotton crop.

IPM Model

The ADSP helped 120 farmers set up IPM demonstration plots, each 3-5 acres, on 496 acres. They used 6.03 biopesticides, 4.31 chemical sprays and got 34.22 maunds/acre on average.

The overall comparison of the ROI shows that cotton with IPM techniques is 115% profitable than non-IPM acres of cotton.

ADSP is convinced that if IPM is fully implemented during the next cotton crop, Pakistan can easily cross the milestone of 15 million bales.

It is our side of the story and expectations!
